NH3 Liquid Withdrawal Valves

A liquid withdrawal valve is a valve designed to control the release of liquid anhydrous ammonia (NH₃) from a pressurised tank into transfer or application equipment. An NH₃ liquid withdrawal valve functions by opening a controlled flow path from the liquid section of the tank when actuated. Internal sealing components regulate the flow of liquid ammonia under pressure, allowing it to be transferred safely to hoses, applicators, or distribution systems. Many designs also incorporate safety features such as excess flow protection or hydrostatic relief to reduce risk during use.

Leaks can be detected through regular visual inspections, ammonia detection equipment, and routine system testing. Preventing leaks involves using properly rated valves, ensuring correct installation, maintaining seals, gaskets, and outlet connections, and replacing worn or damaged components promptly. Some NH₃ liquid withdrawal valves are suitable for use on both bulk tanks and nurse tanks, while others are intended for specific applications. Suitability depends on valve design, included safety features, and system requirements. Combination fill/withdrawal nurse tank valves are more commonly used on nurse tanks where port availability is limited.
